Guildwood Village Information

Guildwood Village is a pleasant community in southern Scarborough. This page lists some general information about the community for residents and visitors.

For this document, Guildwood is assumed to be the area within easy reach of Guildwood Parkway and Sylvan Avenue. The center of the community is roughly the intersection of Guildwood Parkway and Livingston Road.

Although I will make an effort to keep the information reasonable up to date, I offer no guarantees as to the correctness of the information. Please let me know of any necessary corrections.

If you know of anything of general interest to the community, please let me know and I'll add it to this page.

Head's up: There's a proposal to build a 35m tall Bell Mobility telecommunications behind the Guildwood Community Presbyterian Church. For details, visit Bell Proposal. For my opinion, read Cell tower? Not in my backyard!.

Schools

Guildwood Junior Public School
As a result of conservative cuts to school board budgets, as well as other sundry rule changes, there has been talk of closing a number of schools in Toronto. This list included the Guildwood Junior Public School. Although closing schools may well help save the government a few dollars, needless to say, the loss of this particular school would feel like a stake driven in the heart of the community.

Services

  • Toronto Public Library, Guildwood Branch, 123 Guildwood Parkway (in the plaza).

  • Laurier swimming pool, 145 Guildwood Parkway (behind the high school). Open lane swimming is offered on Wednesday and Friday evenings. The fee for lane swimming is $2.50 per evening, but normally the staff don't bother to collect it.

Community Events

  • 2008/5/31: The annual yard sale day is usually held on the last Saturday of May. This event is widely known, and draws people from all of Scarborough. Visitors should note that many streets are narrow, and the volume of parked cars can make driving difficult in some areas. Best to park your car and walk through the streets.

  • 2008/6/5: "Free Concerts in the Guild", featuring "Two for the Show". At the Greek Theater behind the Guild Inn, 7:00PM to 8:30PM, weather permitting.

  • 2008.6.7: "Guildwood Day" takes place on the first Saturday in June. The day usually starts with a pancake breakfast at the Guildwood Community Presbyterian Church. At 10AM, a modest but popular parade takes place along Guildwood Parkway. After the parade, everyone meets behind the high school for more events and food. In the evening, the .Guildwood Village Community Association usually hosts a barbecue (for GVCA members) in the park behind the Guild Inn.

  • 2008.6.12: "Free Concerts in the Guild", featuring "Jeffery Moulton". At the Greek Theater behind the Guild Inn, 7:00PM to 8:30PM, weather permitting.

  • 2008.6.13: Poplar Road Junior Public School holds its very popular "Strawberry Festival". Activities typically include a barbecue, music, and games for children. 6:00PM.

  • 2008.6.5: "Free Concerts in the Guild", featuring "The Tynes". At the Greek Theater behind the Guild Inn, 7:00PM to 8:30PM, weather permitting.

  • 2008.7.6: "A Day in the Gardens of Guildwood", annual garden tour. 1:30PM to 5:00PM.

  • 2008.8.17: "Guild Alive with Culture" arts festival on the grounds behind the Guild Inn. This is intended to be a combination of the long-running Arts Naturally festival, which was cancelled with much consternation last year, and Voices of the Guild: A Storytelling Festival.

  • 2008.9.20: The Guildwood Junior Public School annual "Fall Fest". Events include balloon clown, Toronto Zoo touch table, science fun, craft tables, games, silent auction, and more!

Public Transit

  • .TTC - Guildwood village is served by bus route 116 Morningside.

Westbound, the bus runs along Guildwood Parkway, Kingston Road, and Eglinton Avenue, and ends up at the Kennedy Subway station.

Eastbound, the bus goes along Guildwood Parkway, then turns north on Morningside. Service is relatively frequent during day, with a bus roughly every ten minutes, more frequent during rush hour, less frequent on weekends.

  • .GO - The community is well-served by the Guildwood GO station at 4105 Kingston Road. Many commuters walk to the station, which can be reached through a tunnel under the tracks. Normally, westbound trains stop at the platform nearest to the station.

Here is the schedule effective April 27, 2002. Check the posted schedule at the stations to verify times. At Union Station, be sure to check the monitors to determine which platform to go to. Note that during rush hour, not all trains stop at Guildwood.

Shopping

Plazas

  • Guildwood Parkway at Livingston Road - The plaza at the south-west corner of Guildwood Parkway and Livingston Road is the most prominent collection of stores in the Village. The "anchor" store is ValuMart.

The ValuMart is a great place for shopping. Although it isn't as big as other larger supermarkets further away, it has everything we need. Furthermore, unlike the bigger superstores, this one has a very friendly atmosphere, where our neighbors shop and work. Don't be surprised if you find yourself singing along with the music. I know I'm not the only shopper who does that!
  • Livingston Road, south of Guildwood Parkway - This is a small collection of shops, some of which relocated here after their leases at the larger plaza were not renewed by the plaza owner.

  • Dearham Wood at Poplar Road - A small strip mall with a couple of convenience stores.

Banks

  • CIBC - 95 Guildwood Parkway, in the plaza.

  • Bank of Montreal - 71 Livingston Road.

Postal Outlets

  • Guildwood Kitchen Food Fair, 97 Guildwood Parkway, in the plaza.
