Scarborough - Highland Creek

Heritage Festival

Heritage Day
Pipers on Heritage Day.

Some parts of Scarborough have their own neighborhood festivals. Highland Creek Heritage Day is one of the biggest. The day starts with a parade in the morning. After starting out at Lawson Road and Centennial Road, the parade crosses the bridge over Kingston Road and ends up on Old Kingston Road in Highland Creek.

Heritage Day
Craft sellers.

The parade is pretty substantial for a neighborhood of this size, with marching bands, floats, historic cars, clowns, and politicians riding convertibles. I took my daughter once to watch the parade, but unfortunately, I left my camera at home. It's best to find a shady, grassy spot alongside the road to watch the fun. Fortunately, that's not hard to do.

Heritage Day
Barbecued food.

After the parade, go to Old Kingston Road at Morrish Road for the rest of the festivities. Eat barbecued burgers and hot dogs, check out the historical displays, and shop at the craft vendors. At Morrish Road south of Old Kingston Road, look for a petting zoo and pony rides for the little ones in your family.

This year, the festival will be held June 14, 2008.
