Golden Lake
For 8000 years, the Ottawa Valley has been inhabited by native peoples. In 1873, the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn received Crown Patent to a total of 1561 acres which became the Golden Lake First Nation. As a result of policies of Canadian government policies and assimilition, traditional customs and language have been almost completely lost. However, there have been efforts to return the traditional culture and language to the people.
Our connection to Golden Lake is that my sister-in-law's boyfriend has a cottage on the south side of the lake, not far from the Algonquins. For a few days this summer and last summer, we enjoyed the scenery of the lake, as well as other sights in the Ottawa Valley.
