Hans,

This is a great website! I'm originally from Scarborough and visit TO every so often. I must say the city was much nicer 30+ years ago but, what city wasn't? THe crime rate(shootings) rival those in Los Angeles at times! If I ever move back it'll be to Brockville. Punks!

I just wanted to make a plug for those moving to Toronto with kids. There is a really great alternative school below Casa Loma on 250 Madison Ave called Alan Howard Waldorf School www.ahws.org. They have daycare, parent and child programs, strong outdoors programs in the grade school and do things like commercial free winter fairs- great for buying handmade items. It is an holistic approach to education with very high academic standards. The school is an immediate way to find a dynamic and artistic community and that area of Dupont is really starting to mature into an eclectic neighbourhood with Ezra's Pound coffee shop, Live, a raw and vegetarian restaurant and so much more.

I enjoyed your photos of Toronto's churches. I'm a member at one of them (High Park Baptist Church). I read your selection of quotes relating to spirituality, and I thought it might be nice if you could add one more that pertains to your theme of Christian church buildings, for example John 14:6 from the Bible where Jesus says: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me". This is what Christianity is all about and would perhaps provide more insight into why Toronto and the world are graced with such inspiring church architecture.

What do you have against the Rogers building at Bloor/Jarvis? I think it looks fine.

Downtown TO is a little too fast for me LOL

I was such a "tourist", I was at first afraid to be friendly (I tend to be too friendly) because people would think I had an ulterior motive for it lmao

I know it's not as bad as THAT but I was so scared because of how people portray "TO" the "bad ass" city!

I was pleasantly surprised of how people minded their own and went with the flow of things.

I am in LOVE with "Little India" aka India Bazaar, the mergent's and other visitor's were so stinking sweet!!

This had been my first time visiting both Chinatown and Little India and I will be back!

and probably back to TO if I'm not chicken!

Heather: Shuter and Sherbourne? Uh, no - forget it.

As a general rule, if some downtown apartment seems too good to be true, there's probably a good reason for that. Although there are some exceptions, try to avoid anything in the area bounded by Yonge, Bloor, King, and the Don River.

Good Luck!

I'm going to be moving to Toronto in September because I am transferring to Ryerson University. I am a twenty year old girl, and will be looking for a two bedroom apartment to live in with my friend Emily who is the same age. It seems all the areas around Ryerson are considered "seedy". I've been looking for places on the internet and really liked the looks and price of one on Shutter and Sherbourne. Would this area be a bad place for 2 girls to live? Any suggestions on where to look for a safe, affordable place near Ryerson? I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks!!

I do not agree that a sensible government stopped the Allen Expressway at Eglinton. This was a stupid thing to do. If the expressway had been completed all the way downtown, there would not be all that traffic on Eglinton. The Gardiner should have ben extended eastwards all the way across Scarborough to the 401 as well. Expressways are by-passes and take traffic off local streets, making them far safer.

Although I am quite impressed with your pictures of Toronto, specifically that of St. Jamestown, Sherbourne and Bloor Streets, etc., I felt kinda sad about the "reputation" thing you mentioned about the St. Jamestown area. I've lived here for four years and I have never experienced any harassment, any crimes whatsover. On the contrary, people are unbelievably nice and helpful. Yes it is an "immigrant" town, many asians and blacks live in the area but it doesn't mean that just because this is the case the place is crime-ridden and troublesome. It's a very safe place to live. It is close to many schools, Catholic, private, and public schools, and close to many interesting shops and places. I love being a Torontonian and I'm proud of this community.

As an Eglinton I feel I should offer you some words of hope for the future.

Start a petition and get as many signatures as you can to send to your local authority, asking for free activities for teenagers or start a collection to setup new activities yourself.

Your local internet should have clubs you can join for free too.

I grew up on Donlands so I have memories from the 40s & 50s.

So much has changed.

I recently visited the area to look for the movie houses that I attended as a youngster.

Between Greenwood & Broadview there were: The Palace, Odeon, Cameo (on Pape), Iola, Granada, Century and the Donlands where I was once an usher.

I wanted to comment on your criticism of the Mobility Express.

I don't believe the plan is loony at all. Despite the new expressways that you say only divert traffic, you neglected to mention the Crosstown Expressway, which (if I recall correctly) was situated the same as it was in the old 1966 plan. The Crosstown was integral because it added so many more entry points to the city, which would ease traffic at the current entry points. Currently, the only good way to access the core by car is the series of Gardiner/DVP ramps at the bottom of the city - of COURSE there's going to be congestion if only those routes continue to be used.

With the Crosstown, motorists could reach their destinations quicker and more directly. The Offshore, Scarborough, 400, and Allen/Spadina extensions would most certainly not work if they didn't meet the Crosstown - and that's what I think the main missing link is in your argument.

I am researching the family of Louis A. & Dorothy (Dora) CARDINAL who resided at 312 Rosemary Rd. in FOREST HILL VILLAGE,Toronto, in 1942. Their 21-year-old son (and possibly only child), Barrie Philip Cardinal, a member of the RCAF, was killed when his plane was shot down over Germany in June of '42. Louis was a buyer for the SS Kresge Co. in Toronto. Barrie attended St. Michael's College in Toronto from 1932-1938 and Central Technical from '38-'39. The references on his RCAF application were WJ Tamblyn, Headmaster, Forest Hill School; RO Pennington, Managing Director, Parker Pen Co. where he worked in 1941, and Major JA Gilpin of 310 Rosemary Rd, who worked in an insurance company. I am interested in any information at all about this family or where they lived on Rosemary Road and am particularly interested in finding the cemetary where Mr. & Mrs. Cardinal are buried. Please e-mail me at EveBond@aol.com if you can assist me. Thank You!

I took a Miksang class from John McQuade of Toronto (he flew down to Sonoma, CA. TWICE this year to teach), and became curiousier and curiousier about Toronto, and found this site, and now I want to pull up my American stakes and become a Torontian (someday) I love this site. The people here sound so wonderful with all the things you do for each other, and the forests and environment..OMG. Wanted to order a TREES calendar for 2006, but no link provided.

How can I ever thank you enough this site.

It brings back all my fond memory where I stayed from 1978 to 1979, near before I moved to London Ont.

I have since lived in various various South East Asian Cities.

Toronto is special and visiting your site is like home coming.

Thank you so much for your photograph of 'an apartment block in Forest Hill Village', because in 1952/3, as a child, I used to live at apartment number 303 in this block - in fact behind the windows of the second floor (left). Looking at your photos, the Village seems to have retained its charm. I used to go to Holy Rosary school nearby. I note, for copyright reasons, I cannot download your photograph, so will have to content myself with my rather tattered 1953 b&w view of the block. Again, many thanks - you've given me a highly enjoyable bout of nostalgia!

I really do love your pictures, I've visited your beautiful country 3 times now, and always sad when leaving.

my 1st visit was 33 years ago, my brother lived in a toronto suburb (can't remember which one) 20 years later i stayed with a family, they lived in a street between Dundas en Gerard so if you ever make a picture of that street i really would like to see!!

i will definitely return often to look around, is there a picture of the Simpson and eatons building possible, well i could go on forever but i won't

keep up the good work, it is much appreciated!!!!

Great Site!!! Cheers. I just happened to run into it looking for information on my family history (now I see you also have something in that department as well). I ended up spending about 4 or maybe even 5 hours going in and out of all your Toronto stuff (kewl). I have lived in Toronto in the past (5 years)...and I was just there in August 2005...so what can I say...but...keep up the great work! I miss T.O. badly though...must come back again for another visit. Hopefully the visit will be soon because Winnipeg winters are quite vicious (they don't call it Winterpeg for nothing). Fantastic website. I grew up in the Bloor St George area. My Dad was the Caretaker at Bloor Street United Church from 1959 to 1992 when he retired. I moved away to get married in '75, but I always loved the downtown area. I am ALWAYS on the lookout for archival pictures from Toronto. Particular interest to me are photos of Toronto from the early 60's to the 90's (but mostly from 60-79).

I want to think you for posting this wonderful website. I have bookmarked it and as a suburbanite, I don't miss the downtown quite as much since I visit your site often. I do get downtown from time to time but it's usually to see a show or a Jays, Argo or Leaf game with my wife but we rarely get the opportunity to stroll down memory lane. Thank you!!!!

Please explain why ( on Queen Street East in Torornto ) there is a " Riverside District " and a " Leslieville ", but four little streets in between do not have that designation? I am referring to Booth-Logan-Morse and Verrall streets. Are they excluded and, if yes, why?

First off, this is a treasure of a website. Thank you. I wish I had found it BEFORE our recent visit to TO. But I have pored over its photos and info since to learn more about Toronto, and plan for future visits.

I wish I could thank the wonderful woman at the 501 Streetcar at Queens St. E last Friday, who gave us excellent directions to the beaches, but moreover, gave us personal recommendations as to restaurants, streets and sights to see. My wife, son and I really enjoyed our visit to The Beaches thanks to your guidance...and to Toronto this past week. To the wonderful kind mystery woman from the 501....Thank you so much!

Hi:

I was born at 73 Cavell Ave. Toronto, three blocks south of Danforth Ave. off Pape. Great website. I really want to visit Toronto. I just took a vacation to Montreal and it was very disapointing. It was extremely dirty, littered with trash and there were homeless people all over begging and harrassing people and spitting on people's windshields and then wiping it off and expecting you to give them change. Is Toronto like this? It looks extremely clean in the photos, even the so called shabby areas do not look too threatening. Would somebody let me know, because I would really like to plan my next trip to Canada soon. Thank you! Pete.

For the record, many 'Highways' in Ontario have alternate names: Hwy 9 is also known as Davis Dr. Dufferin, Woodbine, Leslie, Hwy 7, Jane, Keele etc..

So technically, Hwy 11/Yonge St IS the longest street in the world. And many more site are on my side of this argument as opposed to yours.

I have lived in many canadian cities over the years but somehow always manage to end up back in Toronto.

Your site is wonderful. Due to scheduling conflicts any time I have friends or family either show up unannounced or on short notice I show them your website and hand then a handful of TTC tokens. Your site has saved me from the frustration of having to change my personal plans, reschedule meetings or dinner appointments, etc...

Even as a lifelong Torontonian I did manage to learn a few things that I was not aware of regarding thsi bueatiful city. Thank you.

I found your website informative and well designed. Toronto is no doubt an interesting place, yet it has alot of quirks. For one thing, the city should do something about its above ground cables, Toronto has an excessive amount of overhead wires that make it look kind of gritty and unappealing. Has there been any plans to install underground cables? Also, the city's street lighting network looks like it hasn't been updated since the 1950's, is that because they were just so well made back then, that they lasted so long? I've been to TO twice, and although I had a good time, it seems to lack the cosmopolitanism and international flavor like say Montreal has. I know this is a cliche that most Americans make, but I find Montreal much more of a mini New York, and Toronto a laid back, less exciting Chicago. Perhaps I need to go back and experience it again. Great website though. CHEERS

I'd give anything to be able to move back there! to all those detractors complaining of crime and pollution...ad infinitum... ad nauseum Crime? Pollution? Come visit Detroit morons! We know what crime and pollution really is! Come live in a city where 13 yr olds carry fucking ak-47's and parkland is any place you can see grass between the piles of discarded trash and then try and tell me Toronto is a bad place..Assholes! You don't like it/ Don't go there! I for one wish I never had left.

Well this was an alright sight but it did have one picture of Peterborough that made me miss home, of the lift locks. The Picture of the CN tower in Toronto looked awesome and I bet that it is visually appearing to those who have never been to Toronto before. This is a unique website and for a good cause. This is an excellent site! I have never been to Toronto but have heard we may make a work move out there at some point, so to get some sense of what the different neighbourhoods are and what they look like is incredibly helpful.

Great Web Site! Comming from Atlanta in The USA, I find it interesting how nice downtown Toronto looks. Even the East End area looks better than some of the better neighborhoods in Atlanta. Its great to see a city where you don't see people carrying automatic weapons with them for protection!!! Not to mention a public transit system that actually works!!!

Hi there... I ran across your site prior to my second visit to Toronto in 2003. Found it interesting, and I liked the local perspective that wasn't sanctioned by the chamber of commerce. Visted Toronto again this past summer, and this time my wife & I spent days walking the downtown neighborhoods, from the Harbourfront to the Annex & Yorkville. We even took the streetcar out to the Beaches. Now, it's even more fun looking at the photos and reading your comments. Thanks for the insight.

Over the years I collected six CNR caboose chairs which were manufactured in Nova Scotia. These are the honey coloured chairs with rounded backs and wire secures. I don't know if it is appropriate to offer them here, but I have downsized and I would like to see them go to a railway enthusiast for a nominal price. If you have interest please email me at barters@sympatico.ca

I found your site by searching for high park (looking for a map of the actual park.) I love the photographs on your site - just gorgeous. I used to do a lot of photography, and your photos inspired me to take up the art again. I noticed some of your guest book comments were negative or even ignorant - never mind the psychos, just keep doing what you love.

This site needs some major work. You ask for comments but then control them by asking stupid questions that mean nothing and at the end it's impossible to send an e-mail. I don't know, or really care, how many people work on the site, this is unprofessional and sloppy.

I actually came to this site searching for photos of the Princess of Wales theatre. The interior! Well, that didn't work did it.

Good luck making this site function.

Lovely Site!!! I've been living in Toronto for about ten years. It's really interesting to think about all the neighbourhoods at once like this. Wonderful!

Here's something:

I can't seem to find a mention of the "Gallery District", that runs along Queen Street from Shaw to Gladstone. It's a really well-definted neighbourhood, I think, very distinct from the "West Queen West" you find east of the Park, and from Parkdale. The defining feature, of course, is the really dense population of small art galleries. Other definting features and landmarks are the Gladstone Hotel, the Drake Hotel, and the Queen Street Mental Health Center.

I guess it's a fairly new and up-and coming neighbourhood. Seems like one that should definitely be added to the list.

Congrats again on a really wonderful site!!

Let me tell you that I had the opportunity to live in Toronto for 6 months, and even I went in winter, my time there was amazing.

I saw your page just for fun. I was just trying to remember my short time there. With your web page I felt really emotional. It was so icredible to see all the places I visited, I walked and even I saw while ridding the subway. Too many great memories came into my head. Thank you for that!!!.

I really appreciate this kind of work, because not only it is a touristic thing, but a bunch of culture to remember and lern!!!.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I was rescently in Toronto, September27 2003, for my grandmother's funeral. I had also lived in Toronto for 1 year, while I attened a post secondary school. I feel that I can no longer visit the city anymore due to the FACT that the city has gone down the tubes. It isn't even a nice place to visit anymore! I didn't feel safe, no matter where I was in the city, when before atleast there were safe places to go, that crime wasn't high, except in certain area's. The people are rude, ignorant(un-educated), and nasty. It is becoming an americanised city. When I was at Pearson International Airport Terminal 3, I was treated like garbage. Atleast in Halifax, we treat people with some respect. When I lived in Toronto, 1996, it wasn't as bad as it is today! Dirty filthy cockroach infested city! The air is sickening, all year round!

Hey guys! I just wanted to tell you that your site rocks and that you shouldn't listen to some of those people up above that are saying bad things about it. People who open up their mouths just to talk don't actually have any brains and are covering it up by talking and talking. What on earth is wrong with bars, book stores, and electronics shops?

Hi :) I was referred by a friend in Vancouver to your excellent site. I have to admit I don't think I've seen a city site on the web this good before. I should really get off my butt and do one about Perth :) But seriously, an excellent job. I'm still surprised how much parts of Toronto remind me of my times in Melbourne too! I look forward to my future travels to Vancouver and Toronto.

Best of luck and thanks again - Andrew (shuttle@westnet.com.au)

As an import from the north, I view Toronto with the dual eyes of resident/tourist. I love this city, its vibrancy, diversity, and culture. Nice to see a site that does very little Toronto bashing and sees all the wonderful things there are to be had in one of the best cities in the world.

Come piss in Allan Gardens - why not, everyone else does? There are crack dealers available to harass you, drunks falling over randomly. You can watch as they piss in the flower gardens and enjoy the lovely mixture of aromas that result.

Allan Gardens, a cesspool of filth in beautiful Toronto.

Even though Yonge turns into Hwy 11, it doesn't mean that it is no longer the longest road in the world. Your history of the orad is way off, its sad.

Too bad you can't get it!

Enjoyed your photographs and comments, however I feel your should take another look at Toronto's East End. There is some stunning architecture in Cabbagetown South and on Jarvis and Sherbourne Streets. Also you should show photos of the inside of the conservatories at Allan Gardens, they are free to explore and just beautiful. Yes there are some poor areas such as Moss Park and Regent Park which hopefully can be rejuvinated without displacing the poor or islolating the poor. Queen Street East and the neighbourhood of Leslieville are also becoming more interesting areas as is the Trefan Neighbourhood and the emerging communities around King and Sherbourne Streets. Keep up the great site. Thanks and Regards Don Purvis
