Flemingdon Park
Flemingdon Park was Canada's first "apartment city". First proposed in 1958 to house a growing number of immigrants to Toronto, most development was finished in the 1970's. The name is a combination of "Fleming" after the original owner of the farmland, and "Don" from the river that forms the eastern and souther boundary of the neighborhood.
In the early 1980's, I lived in a condo overlooking the Don Valley Parkway. Often, I would walk to work at Eglinton Avenue and Don Mills Road. The supermarket was conveniently located along the walk home.
For cyclists, this area is a dream, with bicycle paths leading in a number of directions. To the north-west, you can cycle through Ernest Thompson Seton Park, up towards Sunnybrook Park and Edwards Gardens. To the south-east, you can cycle through Taylor Creek Park. And to the south-west, cycling paths lead along the Don River all the way to the downtown.
This area is well-served by public transit. Buses along Eglinton Avenue head towards the Eglinton and Kennedy subway stations. To the south, buses head towards either the Pape or Broadview subway stations.
