Wellington & Portland
Wellington Street West doesn't get a lot of traffic. One reason is that cars can't cross Spadina Avenue at Clarence Square. And so this area is rather calm, unlike King Street West a block to the north.
Victoria Memorial Park is dominated by a statue in honor of the soldiers who died in the defence of Toronto during the War of 1812. This park is the site of a cemetery where 20 horses were buried. The horses were ordered killed by a British army captain leaving after the War of 1812 because he thought they would be mistreated by their new owners.
Wellington Street was named after Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington. Wellesley was best known for his victory over Napolean at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
