Introduction
West Hill is a community in Scarborough roughly bounded by Highland creek and the CN rail line. It is an area of contrasts with high density housing in the west and single-family bungalows in other areas. Retail businesses dominate the triangle formed by the intersections of Kingston Road, Morningside Avenue, and Lawrence Avenue East. Industry, primarily chemical, is limited to the south-eastern corner.
Looking at the official plan for 1963, there have been some changes in the past 45 years. The most noticable is that the planned Scarborough Expressway was never built. However, it was only recently removed from the official plan, and the reserved land is now being put to other uses. For example, the new Toronto Police 43 Division headquarters was built on land originally set aside for the expressway.
Living in Guildwood Village, West Hill is, of course, part of our wider community. But even after living next door to West Hill for more than a decade, I never thought of taking pictures in West Hill until recently. Although it may seem like little more than yet another non-descript part of Scarborough, there are places worth seeing. Old Kingston Road has some historic buildings. In the west, St. Margaret's Church is a pleasant corner that's all too easy to miss as you speed by on Lawrence Avenue.
