Grease Pole

Grease Pole

September 1980, Kingston, Canada.

For first-year students in the Faculty of Engineering, frosh week is quite the experience. For most of the week, they are subjected to degradation and insult at the hands of the upper year students. But on the last Saturday of frosh week, the first year engineering students go through one final test. An engineering tam is nailed to the top of a greased pole standing in a pit of grease and slime. Upper year engineering students circle the pit armed with rotten tomatoes. According to tradition, the engineering year is not officially recognized until the frosh retrieve the tam.
