Schloß Herrenchiemsee June 1989, Chiemsee, Germany The "mad" King Ludwig II built three castles. This is the castle that finally bankrupted the kingdom. It was intended to be a more or less exact copy of the palace of Versailles, but was never completed. Construction started in 1878 and went on until 1886. Ludwig himself only spent one week in the castle. To get to the castle, board a boat at Prien. The other castles built by King Ludwig II are Schloß Neuschwanstein and Schloß Linderhof.
