Marburg, Elisabethkirche

June 2000, Marburg, Germany

The Elisabethkirche, the first truly Gothic church in Germany, was built 1235-1283. The church was named after St. Elisabeth (1207-1231), daughter of the King of Hungary, and intended bride of the Landgrave Ludwig of Thuringia. She was well known for her charitable acts to the poor and the lengths to which she was able to help them. After the death of her husband in 1227, she took charge of a hospital. In 1231, she herself died of exhaustion. Four years later she was canonized.

The church was built by members of the Teutonic Order to receive her remains. But in 1527, her descendent the Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous moved her remains to a nearby cemetery after converting to Protestantism and abolishing the cult of relics.
