June 1989, Bamberg, Germany

I arrived in Bamberg on an overcast Saturday at mid-afternoon. As soon as I parked my car, the first raindrops started falling. As the rain started getting worse, I ducked into a bar to wait out the showers, and had a Rauchbier (a smoked beer brewed locally) and a piece of apple cake.

But the rain didn't let up, and since I still wanted to see the sites, I went out again. I learned an important lesson that day - always bring along an umbrella when touring Germany!

The photo shows the unusual city hall situated on a small island in the middle of the Regnitz. I returned to Bamberg several years later and took another photo from the same spot on a clear day, but I still like this photo better.

To the south is Schloß Weißenstein. To the north is Vierzehnheiligen. To the east are Gößweinstein and Pottenstein.
