Oratoire St Joseph

Montreal-Oratoire-StJoseph.jpeg

Montréal, Québec, Canada

The Oratoire St Joseph is a large basilica on the west side of Mount Royal, and an important site for Catholic pilgrims. Construction began in 1924, and was completed in 1967. The basilica was the dream of Brother André, a Holy Cross monk who served from 1870 to 1937. Brother André was known as a healer, crediting St. Joseph for answering his prayers. André was beatified in 1982, and his remains were interred in a tomb in the building.

Visitors can tour the site starting at the Pilgrim's Pavilion, and proceeding through the Votive Chapel, Brother André's Tomb, the Crypt Church, and the Concourse Hall, to the Terrace on the Roof where you get a nice view of the city to the west. Outside, you can visit the Way of the Cross and the gardens of the Oratory. Further inside, you can visit the Museum of St Joseph's Oratory, and Basilica, and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.

Also on this site is a simple wooden chapel built 1904-1910.
