Montréal, Québec, Canada

The city hall building in Vieux Montréal opened for business in 1878 replacing the old building that now houses the Bonsecours Market. The building survived a fire in 1922. The balcony of city hall is where French president Charles de Gaulle spoke those famous words: "Vive le Québec libre!" in 1967. (de Gaulle was promptly asked by the federal government to leave the country following that remark.)
