Citadel Halifax, Nova Scotia. May 1982. The present Citadel on this site (the 4th) was built starting in 1828. It was completed in 1856 after numerous delays due to design and structural problems. But very shortly afterwards, after much money was spent, the introduction of rifled artillery rendered the fort obsolete. It continued to be used as a barracks into the 20th century, and was handed over to the Canadian militia in 1906 after the British pulled out. In 1951, it was turned over to the Department of Resources and Development, and in 1956 was declared a national historic park. During my visit in 1982, much restoration work was still underway.
