Schloß Neuschwanstein![]() June 1989, Füssen, Germany This is the most gaudy and ostentatious of the three castles built in the 19th century by the "mad" King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Ludwig oversaw the construction from the nearby castle Hohenschwangau. Although the official story is that Ludwig died by drowning himself in the Sternberger See, some Bavarians stick to the story that a crowd of angry peasants chased him up the tower of Neuschwanstein and forced him to jump from the top to his death. Starting after Ludwig's death, Schloß Neuschwanstein has been one of the most popular and famous tourist attractions in Germany. But be sure to arrive early. Even if you arrive at 10AM, you're likely to face a wait of two and a half hours before getting in! Another of King Ludwig's castles with a shorter wait is Schloß Linderhof. His third castle was Schloß Herrenchiemsee. Other pictures like this one can be found at Bavaria |
