Peterborough Lift Locks

A common misconception is that the Peterborough Lift Locks are the biggest lift locks in the world. With a vertical lift of almost 20m, these locks were the largest when built. But now, the largest lift locks are at Scharnebeck, east of Lüneburg, in Germany.

However, the Peterborough lift locks still hold the distinction of being the largest hydraulic lift locks. That is, the two locks counter-balance each other with hydraulic pressure.
