May 2000, Piran, Slovenia

At one time, the southwest corner of Slovenia was ruled by Venice. As a result, many people here still speak Italian, which is an official language in this part of the country.

Economic stagnation under Austrian rule meant that this town was able to keep much of its medieval flavor. This, along with the beaches, makes Piran a very popular spot for tourists, especially in the Summer.
