Terry Fox Memorial![]() May, 2002. Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox began his cross-country run in support of cancer research in St. John's, Newfoundland. Terry had earlier lost a leg to the disease, and wanted to do something to help others afflicted by the disease. During his run, he attracted more and more attention, as he ran about 42km per day. However, on September 1, he had to abandon his run near Thunder Bay when cancer reappeared, in his lungs. Before he died on June 28, 1981 at age 22, Terry raised $24,000,000 for cancer research. To honor his courage, a monument was erected near the spot where he stopped his run. The monument was officially dedicated on June 26, 1982. This spot was named the Terry Fox Scenic Lookout, and a stretch of highway 11/17 was named the Terry Fox Courage Highway. (Photo by Ernst and Jane Boldt.)
