When I was offered the chance to attend a computer conference in Houston, I jumped at the opportunity. As a space fan, of course I stayed in Houston for a few extra days to visit the Johnson Space Center. This was especially meaningful for me since it was just a few weeks after the flight of STS-41G. One of the passengers on that flight was Marc Garneau, whose job it was to be the first Canadian in space.

This photo shows a couple of rockets parked on the lawn. At the left, lying on its side, is an Apollo Saturn V rocket, the same kind that carried men to the Moon between 1968 and 1972. In the middle is a Little Joe II, which was used for unmanned test flights of the Apollo command module, testing its launch escape system. At right is a Mercury Redstone rocket, of the type that carried Alan Shepard into space in 1961.

I visited years before the present visitors center was built. At that time, you could take a short guided tour that culminated in the mission control building. A small number of other buildings also had rooms open to the public, including the Lunar Receiving Lab. Still, there was enough to keep me busy for most of the day.
