2005/06 Season So FarCategory: Bowling Well, we're now 12 weeks into the current bowling season. I've been hesitant to comment up until now since I've been bowling so lousy. But for the past few weeks, things have been picking up. I ended last years season with a 173 average. Not the best, but still respectable in my league where the best bowlers average just under 200. But during the first few weeks of the new season, I could barely manage an average in the low 140's. For some reason, I couldn't loosen up enough to get my game together. After nine weeks of struggling, I could only manage a miserable average of 147. That changed two weeks ago. I got to the alley early, and banked a set of bowl-ahead games. Those scores were still awful. But during practice before regular league play, I made a change to my technique. This time, I tried throwing the ball harder. Sometimes, a harder throw helps me to control the ball better. Usually, though, I can't keep up the pace for too long before my arm tires out. But this time, I bowled three great games: 193, 254, and 236. It was more than enough to earn me the second game pot of $21, as well as two entries in the alley's "turkey draw". Furthermore, I even managed to win the "doubles tournament", earning another $15! (Five-pin bowling is not known for big money winnings!) Sometimes, it doesn't take much to turn your game around. Sometimes, you need to start a board or two to the side, or turn your wrist at a slightly different angle, or take a good deep breath before starting your delivery. But whatever it takes, one good triple can really turn around your confidence, which can make the most difference of all. Last week, I turned in a more respectable set of scores averaging 172, not as good as I'd like, but still back in my old scoring neighborhood. And this week, my triple averaged 193, bringing my season average up to 159.9. Oh yeah, what about those lousy bowl-ahead scores I banked two weeks ago? The next time I miss an evening, those scores will count against me. This gives me an extra incentive not to miss any evening of league bowling for the rest of the season!
