Shocked I Say, Shocked!Category: Politics I am shocked, shocked to learn of corruption in politics! Of course there's corruption in politics. What else is new? As shown by the Gomery Inquiry, there was corruption in Chrétien's government. The stench of corruption also permeated the previous Conservative government led by "Lyin' Brian". Some suggest that Paul Martin's Liberal government should be punished for the crimes of some in Chrétien's. But others rightfully point out that that would be like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Overall, the Liberals have provided some fine governance over the past 13 years. In 1992, the Conservatives left the country in a fiscal mess, with a massive budget deficit. The Liberals turned the budget around. Eight consecutive surplus budgets and a much improved debt to GDP ratio are some of the accomplishments of the Liberals in Ottawa. In contrast, the Conservatives under Stephen Harper would likely plunder the surplus, paying off their supporters. Harper would likely do to the federal budget what the Mike Harris conservatives did to the Ontario provincial budget. Harris campaigned on fiscal responsibility, but left the provincial budget with a multi-billion dollar deficit. A federal election will happen sometime within the next nine months. But what should be debated during the campaign? The issue of corruption, which we all know happens in any government? Or on specific fiscal and social policies? Should we focus on the past criminal acts of some politicians (which should be addressed by the courts)? Or on how to deal with real social and economic problems facing the country now and in the future? It's almost certain that Stephen Harper's lust for power will bring on an election before the end of Spring. Perhaps a (short-lived) minority Conservative government will be good for the country. Canadians will then see the Conservatives' true stripes in the measures they will take to cling to power. Specifically, will they form a strategic alliance with the Bloc Québecois? With a loss of power, will the Liberals do the right thing and dump Paul Martin as leader? Hans path: /Politics | permanent link to this entry ![]() | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
