The French province of Guadeloupe consists of two islands - the relatively flat Grande-Terre and the hilly Basse-Terre. The central area of Basse-Terre is set aside as a national park. The underwater reefs separating Basse-Terre from Pigeon Island on the Caribbean coast were rated by Jacque Cousteau as among the best in the world.
