August 1994, Spitz, Austria
Driving from Slovenia to Germany, we took a scenic route through the Austrian Alps. When we arrived at the Gerlospaß, we found lots of people getting ready for a car rally through the pass. Fortunately, they let us through before the rally started. Ten minutes later, we would have had to wait a couple of hours to continue.
At Gmund, at the top of the pass, we stayed overnight at a pleasant Gasthaus in Gmund. The next day, we continued on, stopping for this photo of the Ziller Valley.

Much of what we have to say about Germany also applies to Austria. There are a couple of differences, though.
Driving on the Autobahns in Austria requires a special permit. You can buy one at many shops and service stations before entering Austria. In addition, there are tolls on most tunnels, and many mountain passes.
Accommodation is generally easier to find than in Germany. Since Austria is most popular for tourists in the winter, bed-and-breakfast accommodation is easy to find during the summer, at very affordable rates. But accommodation in the popular spots can still fill up quickly during long weekends.
