August 1994, St. Wolfgang, Austria
A street scene in the popular resort town of St. Wolfgang, in the heart of the Salzkammergut. We arrived just before a long holiday weekend, and so we had to try at least a dozen places before we found an available room.

Much of what we have to say about Germany also applies to Austria. There are a couple of differences, though.
Driving on the Autobahns in Austria requires a special permit. You can buy one at many shops and service stations before entering Austria. In addition, there are tolls on most tunnels, and many mountain passes.
Accommodation is generally easier to find than in Germany. Since Austria is most popular for tourists in the winter, bed-and-breakfast accommodation is easy to find during the summer, at very affordable rates. But accommodation in the popular spots can still fill up quickly during long weekends.
