Scarborough Trains

Passenger train on Grand Trunk Railway near Agincourt (1893).

The lines of two railroads run through Scarborough: Canadian National and Canadian Pacific.

The CN main line runs along the Lake Ontario shore. It is predominantly a double track line with a significant stretch of triple track between Guildwood and Scarborough stations. GO trains of the Lakeshore East line stop at Rouge Hill, Guildwood, Eglinton, and Scarborough stations, and most VIA trains stop at Guildwood. Another single track line veers north immediately to the east of Scarborough station, and has a GO station at Agincourt. Also, a CN freight line cuts through the Rouge Park at the north-east corner of Toronto.

Train on Grand Trunk Railway line at Scarborough Village (1898).

Two single track lines of the CP enter Scarbourough at the north-east corner of the city and meet at the marshalling yards at Malvern, between Finch Avenue East, Markham Road, Nugget Avenue, and Middlefield Road. A double track main line leaves the yard to the south-west, and proceeds towards Don Mills and the middle of Toronto.

There are a couple of good spots for train watching:

  • A couple of bridges cross the CP tracks at the Malvern yard. The best view is from the bridge on Finch Avenue East, just west of Markham Road. Another bridge crosses the tracks on Markham Road, halfway between Finch and Sheppard.
  • A bridge on Kingston Road between Scarborough Golf Club Road and Morningside Avenue offers a good view of Guildwood station. GO trains, as well as most VIA trains stop here.
  • Rouge Beach Park, at the eastern-most corner of Toronto, offers not only a good view of the railroad bridge crossing the Rouge River, but also a pleasant beach, and a good spot for fishing.
  • Port Union Commons Park at the foot of Port Union Road offers some nice views of the CN main line. Walk through the tunnel under the tracks, and head for the hill on the right.
  • For dinner, be sure to get a window table at the Swiss Chalet restaurant across the street from Eglinton station, at Eglinton Avenue East and Bellamy. During the late afternoon rush, you can watch an almost continuous parade of GO and VIA trains.
