Harbord Street

Harbord Street
Harbord Street, looking west at Spadina.

In the blocks west of Spadina, this street is home to a number of book stores, new and used, as well as cafes.

Grad House
The Grad House is probably the ugliest building in the city.

This street has seen its share of controversy. In the late 1970's, early 1980's, the Morgentaler shared a building with the Women's Bookstore. In July 1983, though, the building was firebombed.

The Women's Bookstore rebuilt, and the Morgantaler clinic moved to a neighboring house. In opposition, an anti-choice group moved into the other half of the duplex! Eventually, in 1992 the clinic was bombed again, and Morgentaler moved somewhere else. The crime has since remained unsolved. This reminds me of something Voltaire said: "As long as people believe in absurdities they will continue to commit atrocities."
